How Much Does a Structural Engineer Cost in London?

Structural engineer fees in London vary widely and the cheapest quote is rarely the best value. Understanding what drives the price lets you compare quotes fairly and avoid surprises later.

This guide explains what affects the fee, what a sensible quote should include, and how to judge two proposals that look very different on price.

What affects the fee

The main drivers are the complexity of the structure, how many elements need designing, how much surveying and investigation is required, and how many design changes the project is likely to see. A single steel beam over a wall opening is quick. A rear extension with a loft conversion and new foundations is a very different scale of work.

What should be included

Ask whether the quote includes a site visit, structural calculations, drawings suitable for Building Control, and answers to queries from your builder and inspector. Check whether revisions and extra visits are included or charged separately, because this is where low headline prices often grow.

Fixed fee or hourly

A fixed fee for a clearly described scope gives you certainty. Hourly arrangements can suit uncertain or evolving work but need a sensible cap. For typical residential alterations a fixed fee is usually the clearer option.

Comparing quotes fairly

Compare scope, not just price. Look at the deliverables, the assumptions, the turnaround time and whether the engineer is familiar with your local Building Control. A quote that is slightly higher but includes site support and revisions can cost less overall.

Cost against the wider budget

Engineering fees are a small part of most project budgets, while the structure it prevents going wrong, such as an oversized steel order or a rejected application, can be expensive. Good early design often saves more than it costs.
