Structural engineering in Crouch End

Crouch End is full of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and converted houses, with solid brick party walls, chimney stacks and timber floors. Each of those features affects how a home can safely be altered.

Removing load-bearing walls

Knocking a kitchen and dining room together is one of the most common projects here. If the wall carries the floors or roof above, a steel beam is needed with correct end bearings and padstones, and the opening must be propped in the right order. We design the beam, check the supports and produce the calculation pack for Building Control.

Chimney breasts

Chimney breasts are often removed to gain floor space, but taking one out without support can leave the stack and brickwork above unsupported. The usual solution is a gallows bracket or a beam carrying the remaining stack, which we specify with calculations.

Flats and shared buildings

In converted houses your neighbours' ceilings and structure are often directly above and below your works. You may need landlord consent and notices under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, and early structural input helps you answer those questions.
