Structural engineering in North Finchley

North Finchley's streets are largely interwar semis and detached houses, with some Victorian terraces around Tally Ho Corner and Ballards Lane. These houses are well suited to extension, and most extensions need structural design.

Rear and wraparound extensions

Wide bi-fold or sliding doors at the back of the house need steel across the opening. A wraparound extension, combining rear and side, brings several beams together at corners, so the connections and load paths matter as much as the beam sizes.

Permitted development is not the whole story

Many houses can extend under permitted development rights, subject to size limits and conditions that Barnet Council can confirm. Even when planning permission is not needed, Building Regulations approval still is, and that includes structural design.

Flat roofs and glazing

Roof lights and large glazed doors have tight deflection limits. We design the flat roof structure and the supporting beams so that doors and glass operate properly once the loads are on.
