Structural Engineer in Bounds Green: Hip-to-Gable and Dormer Loft Conversions

Structural engineering in Bounds Green
Bounds Green is mostly Edwardian and interwar terraces and semis, between Wood Green and Palmers Green. Loft conversions are the project we are asked about most here.
Hip-to-gable conversions
Semis and end-of-terrace houses often have a hipped roof. Converting the hip to a gable adds headroom but needs a new gable wall, bracing, and usually new ridge and purlin steel. We design the roof structure and check the walls beneath.
Rear dormers and new floors
Existing ceiling joists were never designed as a bedroom floor. We specify new floor joists or steel beams spanning wall to wall and trace the load path down to the foundations.
Staircases and planning
A new staircase opening needs trimming in the floor below, which we detail. Whether the roof extension needs planning permission depends on its size and your property, so check with Haringey Council.
