Programme Planning for Small Construction Projects

Updated: 7 days ago
Many small projects overrun because the programme only covers the building work and ignores everything before it. A realistic plan starts earlier and thinks wider.
This guide shows how to plan a programme for an extension or refurbishment.
Pre-construction stages
Design, planning, party wall, Building Control and tender each take time. Mapping them early shows the true start date rather than the hoped-for one.
Lead times and sequencing
Steelwork, windows and specialist items often have long lead times. Order them in time so trades are not left waiting, and sequence trades logically on site.
Dependencies and approvals
Some work cannot start until an approval or inspection is complete. Build these into the programme so they are not discovered late.
Building in contingency
A sensible allowance for weather, hidden conditions and variations keeps expectations realistic. A programme with no float is rarely met.
Tracking progress
Review progress weekly, update the programme and tell the client early about slippage so decisions can be made in time.
