CDM 2015 Duties for Domestic Clients

Updated: 7 days ago
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 apply to almost all construction work, including domestic projects. The duties differ for homeowners but do not disappear.
This guide gives a plain-English overview. It is general information, not legal advice.
Domestic clients
For work on your own home, many client duties pass to the contractor or principal contractor, but you should still appoint competent people and give them relevant information.
Designers' duties
Designers must consider health and safety in their design and eliminate or reduce risks where they can.
Contractors' duties
Contractors must plan, manage and monitor their work so it is carried out safely, with suitable welfare and site arrangements.
Where more than one contractor is involved
A principal designer and principal contractor must be appointed. If you do not appoint them, the duties may fall to you.
Practical steps
Choose competent professionals, share information about the property and agree who holds each role in writing.
